In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET)
In Vitro Fertilization is an assisted reproduction technique, which consists in joining female gametes (mature oocytes) with male gametes (sperm) which are previously prepared in a laboratory to ensure the oocytes are fertilised. Once the embryos which are obtained develop in the laboratory, they are selected and transferred to the patient’s uterine cavity.
This technique, developed to treat sterility caused by problems with the fallopian tubes, is now used to treat infertility problems in both women and men, as well as sterility due to unknown causes, tubal ligation, or in cases when Artificial Insemination has not been successful.
